Review: SelvaRey Coconut Rum

SelvaRey — best known as Bruno Mars’ rum company — is out with its newest expression: Coconut. No huge surprises await here. This is a two year old rum, filtered to clear, infused with “a velvety coconut essence.”

As coconut rums go, SelvaRey doesn’t exactly raise the bar. A bit harsh on the nose, the aromatics are driven more by industrial notes than coconut, coming across as neither sweet nor particularly tropical, with more of a toasty milk chocolate and graham cracker character wafting from the glass alongside the boozier notes. I was expecting a rich and sweet character on the palate but was surprised to find a rather quiet, somewhat watery experience in the glass. There simply isn’t enough coconut flavor in the mix to really resonate here — again with industrial and vaguely sweet elements taking center stage — with the finish strangely taking a trip from thin to rather gummy in texture.

Try Rhum Clement’s coconut liqueur as an alternative.

60 proof.
