Few names from American whiskey history deserve more attention than R.E. Wathen. While many legendary brands survived Prohibition, the people responsible for preserving them are often overlooked. Richard E. Wathen was one of those figures.

Beginning in November 1927, Wathen served as president of the American Medicinal Spirits Company, assuming the position shortly after the company’s formation during National Prohibition. At a time when nearly every distillery in America had gone silent, American Medicinal Spirits held one of the few federal licenses permitting the legal manufacture and bottling of whiskey for medicinal purposes. Under Wathen’s leadership, the company consolidated several distilleries while safeguarding recipes, trademarks, and aging whiskey stocks that otherwise might have disappeared. He acquired shuttered distilleries as Prohibition threatened generations of distilling knowledge, preserving names such as Old Grand-Dad, Old Taylor, Old Crow, and Old Overholt. All the Olds. By the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, Wathen reportedly controlled approximately 45 percent of all aging whiskey stocks in the United States, later guiding American Medicinal Spirits into its transition to National Distillers Products Corporation.

The Wathen family story reaches back even farther. Their first pioneering distillery, Rolling Fork, was founded in 1788. Although the modern Rolling Fork Spirits does not distill whiskey, instead operating as an independent bottler and blender of whiskey and rum, the company has revived both the Rolling Fork name and another piece of Wathen history through Rewco, a brand created in honor of Richard E. Wathen.

That history sets the stage for Rewco 6 Year Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey Barrel Strength, released in 2026. Batch No. 2026-01 combines five Kentucky rye whiskey barrels aged for at least six years. Three barrels were distilled from a mashbill of 74% rye, 11% corn, and 15% malted barley. While the source has not been disclosed, the recipe matches the mashbill associated with Willett Family Estate, though nothing indicates Willett distilled the whiskey. The remaining two barrels use a 95% rye, 5% malted barley mashbill, a recipe also distilled by Green River and Bardstown Bourbon Company, though the origin of those barrels likewise remains undisclosed. The resulting blend is bottled at 109.4 proof, an unusually low barrel proof for a cask strength release.

R.E. Wathen’s place in American whiskey history is beyond dispute. Does Rewco 6 Year Old Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey Barrel Strength live up to the legacy attached to his name? Let’s find out.

Rolling Fork Rewco Barrel Strength Rye 6 Years Old Review

The nose opens with a very specific vanilla note, bringing to mind vanilla Tootsie Rolls alongside orange sherbet. After a minute in the glass, overripe banana peels begin to show, followed by grilled peaches finished with a light dusting of cinnamon. From start to finish, the aroma stays focused on sweetness with very little spice, though it never crosses into sugary territory. It also suggests a whiskey with considerable viscosity, and the palate confirms that expectation from the first sip.

Cream soda leads the way, followed by tart Key Lime pie, right down to the graham cracker crust. A mild note of fresh mint arrives late across the mid-palate. The finish introduces Lemonhead candy alongside a slightly bitter grapefruit pith. Just as the profile appears ready to stay on the sweeter, fruit-driven side, a healthy dose of allspice steps in to bring everything back into line, providing exactly the contrast the whiskey needs.

Overall, Rewco is an excellent value and a solid rye whiskey that stands above many entry-level bottles. For anyone who is rye-curious and unsure where to begin, jumping straight into a traditional black pepper-driven rye may not be the ideal introduction. Rewco instead offers fruit-forward sweetness, enough spice to show what the category has to offer, a proof point above 100, and a price that is difficult to argue with. It serves as an outstanding entry point into premium rye whiskey without asking newcomers to sacrifice flavor, proof, or value.

109.4 proof.
