Review: Dorda Coffee Liqueur
We’ve previously encountered Chopin-owned Dorda with its chocolate liqueur and now we’re back with the Polish company’s second expression, a coffee liqueur made from “100% Robusta coffee bean extract, sugar, and a blend of Chopin Rye Vodka and rum from the Philippines.”
Dorda Coffee Liqueur Review
The nose of the liqueur is rich with coffee but not overpowering in the way that many artisanal coffee liqueurs tend to be these days. A hearty chocolate influence gives the liqueur a mocha quality, and the rum is evident here too, offering hints of honey and brown sugar that telegraph some of the sweetness that lies ahead. Vanilla and a pinch of baking spice add complementary aromatics.
The palate doesn’t diverge from expectations, though the rum component may be even more pronounced here, as is the sweetness. A clearer brown sugar character tempers what should be the main event — the coffee — more than a bit, along with the chocolate that seems so effusive on the nose. Ultimately it’s more nut-forward than espresso-like. The liqueur results in a finish that is the slightest bit cloying and less punchy than I’d have liked to see, though that sweetness certainly makes it all too easy to sip on straight. It’s a fine choice for your cocktail, too.
