Spirits
Spirits are beverages made by the process of distillation. The “Spirits” category is not commonly used at Drinkhacker because the vast majority of reviews we publish fall into this category. It is used only occasionally to help organize our category list (and mainly gets clicked by accident).
Hacienda de Chihuahua has been producing sotol in the desert of Chihuahua since the 19th century, using a non-industrial process that seems to be unchanged for much of its existence. The distillery offers a surprisingly large portfolio of aged and unaged sotol, even a pair of sotol-based cream liqueurs. Today we’re taking an initial look…
Last year, Maestro Dobel dropped three special edition extra anejo tequilas — dupped 1968, 1969, and 1970 — all follow-ups to its original anniversary bottling, Dobel 50 1967. Now it’s back with three more expressions, as those 50th anniversaries apparently can’t stop coming. These are all made from single estate agave, and all three are at…
World Whiskey Society (WWS) has only been around since 2020, but it’s become a veritable juggernaut in the non-distilling producer space, cranking out so many new whiskeys each quarter that it’s difficult to keep up with it all. Today we check out a trio of new releases, including one from its Doc Holliday Collection and…
We’re eight years into Brown-Forman’s King of Kentucky project, and once again the age is ticking up: This single barrel bourbon now boasts a 17 year old age statement, with 63 barrels selected by Chris Morris for inclusion in the release. With proofs ranging from 124.4 to 135, Morris picked from the 4th floor of…
Hatozaki‘s periodic “Omakase” releases continue with this fourth offering, the oldest age-stated release in the series to date. It’s a 15 year old single malt made at Kaikyo Distillery on the shore of the Seto Inland Sea, aged for 12 years in bourbon barrels and, like much of its lineup, finished in mizunara oak, this…
While Fernet-Branca is the most well-known of its ilk, “fernet” is actually a style of densely bitter amaro, invariably made with a secret recipe, though most include myrrh, rhubarb, chamomile, cardamom, aloe, and saffron in the mix — at least according to Wikipedia. Luxardo makes one, too, billing it as “Fernet Amaro,” claiming an infusion of…
Once again, a trio of Larceny Barrel Proof whiskeys graced the whiskey shelves in 2025. You won’t find any major surprises in any of these releases, which is probably for the best. It continues to be one of the better barrel proof wheaters on the market. And it remains a pretty good value at $70. Let’s…
What did we do to deserve not one, not two, but three Distillery Reserve releases in one year from Bardstown Bourbon Company? The powerhouse whiskey purveyors have dabbled in distillery-only releases over the years, but they’ve clearly hit their stride with this new series of rare blends finished in unique casks. The debut, a standout…
The amaro craze continues with the launch of Brucato, a collection of three amari made in San Francisco with a heavy reliance on California-grown botanicals. The trio of expressions are markedly different, but all are widely versatile, able to be used as an aperitif, digestif, or — my pick — as a cocktail ingredient or…
Check the fine print and you’ll see that this new release from the Bardstown-based non-distilling producers at 15 Stars have bottled a whiskey that is a blend of 12 year old and 15 year old straight bourbon stock. Naturally, only the youngest can appear as the formal age statement, but a little digging reveals more data.…
