Spirits
Spirits are beverages made by the process of distillation. The “Spirits” category is not commonly used at Drinkhacker because the vast majority of reviews we publish fall into this category. It is used only occasionally to help organize our category list (and mainly gets clicked by accident).
Camikara is produced in India by Picadilly Distillery (producer of the Indri whisky line) using local sugar cane (not molasses or jaggery, common for the country), making it an unusual agricole style Indian rum. It’s matured in bourbon casks (with no white rum expression available) and is sold in expressions of 3, 8, and 12…
The latest in Old Forester’s 117 Series is a bourbon that honors its legacy as one of the few distilleries legally permitted to produce whiskey for medicinal purposes during Prohibition. Prohibition Era Still Proof is a bourbon bottled at 130 proof, which was the bottling abv during Old Forester‘s 100-day distiller’s holiday a few years…
An estimated 95% of the world’s rum is distilled from molasses, a material that originated as an industrial byproduct of sugar production. By contrast, only about 2-4% of global rum output is made from fermented fresh cane juice. This smaller tradition is closely tied to French colonial history and is commonly known as rhum agricole.…
San Francisco-based Brucato Spirits is the company behind Oro y Fierro (“gold and iron”) a new line of liqueurs based on — wait for it — kumquats. That’s the gist — made with California-grown fruit — so let’s dive in to this pair of sweet operators. Both are a hearty 80 proof. Oro y Fierro…
Garrison Brothers‘ Laguna Madre is considered (by it and by others) to be its most prized whiskey, the mash of 74% corn, 15% wheat, and 11% barley aged for four years in white American oak barrels and then transferred into French Limousin oak casks for another four years of aging in the Texas Hill Country…
Bunnahabhain‘s 2025 Feis Ile release was distilled in 2008, and this one-off release is a blend of two types of casks, both made with unpeated barley. The first was matured for its full 15 years in Manzanilla sherry casks, a standby style for the distillery. The second cask type is aged for 10 years in…
What is elderflower? Before St. Germain hit the scene in 2007, it wasn’t a flower I gave much thought to, but after that moment in time, the cocktail world changed forever. Elderflower is a product harvested from the elder tree (Sambucus), which is a shrub that grows widely across Europe and the U.S. The white…
Cocktail & Sons makes some amazing artisanal syrups and mixers, and lately it’s put its first foot into the non-alcoholic spirits space with the launch of ZeroNero [red], a bitter amaro designed for solo sipping or for use in cocktails or with simple mixers like seltzer or soda. Listed botanicals include cloves, cassia bark, star…
Dark Arts Whiskey House was founded in 2023 by Macaulay Minton and David Peet with a clear focus on blending, re-barreling, and secondary maturation through non-traditional techniques. Minton serves as the brand’s Chief Alchemist, a title that reflects more than flair. Alchemy, an ancient philosophical and proto-scientific tradition, sought transformation above all else, most famously…
Each year Aberfeldy releases a whisky (or more than one) that is finished in a specialty wine cask. For its 2025 release, that’s an especially interesting one, opting for wine casks from Tuscany’s Bolgheri, home to some of the world’s most prized wines, like Sassicaia and Ornellaia. Per the distillery: Crafted by Malt Master Stephanie…
