Review: 2020 Frescobaldi Tenuta Calimaia Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG

Here’s a look at a one-off from long-covered-by-Drinkhacker Frescobaldi, our second review of its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano bottling, Tenuta Calimaia.

I enjoyed this 2020 bottling a bit more than the 2019, its tart core offering an insistent fruitiness that wavers between cherry and underripe raspberry. There’s ample baking spice to keep things interesting, with a heavier note of anise and a touch of dark chocolate emerging later. A moderate orange blossom note adds an healthy edge of florality, but a balsamic reprise on the finish washes it out fairly quickly. It’s a well-rounded journey — and also an outstanding value.
