Review: 2022 Stone Edge Farm Sauvignon Blanc Moon Mountain District
Stone Edge Farm Estate Vineyards & Winery is found in one of the most sensuous-sounding AVAs in California — Moon Mountain. Here, the operation produces “age-worthy, earth-conscious Bordeaux-style wines” — and that includes white wines, not just red. Bordeaux Blanc wines are typically blended from sauvignon blanc and semillon, and Stone Edge follows that lead: This wine, while billed on the label as a sauvignon blanc, is actually a blend of blend of 77% sauvignon blanc and 23% semillon.
Per the company: “The grapes are sourced from Stone Edge Farm’s 160-acre Silver Cloud vineyard, situated at an elevation of 1,800 feet in the Moon Mountain District, then harvested in the early morning to preserve their cold temperature, and finally transported to the winery, contributing to the creation of this Bordeaux Blanc style wine.”
The semillon does a lot of the work here, giving the wine a more citrus-driven character and tempering the often-heavy floral and grassy elements common in California sauvignon blanc. Lightly peachy elements inform the midpalate, and that subtle perk of ammonia eventually rears its head on the cleansing but well-perfumed finish. Hints of lavender linger, though there’s an echo of pineapple that screams a reminder of the tropical power of sauvignon blanc. Excellent with a lighter meal, especially seafood.
