Review: Cathead Pecan Flavored Vodka

The folks at Cathead (nee Bottletree Beverage Company) don’t just make bourbon and gin, they also make vodka — both straight and flavored. Today we look at the company’s most unique flavored vodka expression: Pecan.

Let’s give it a try.

The nose is initially mild and lightly astringent with classic vodka notes, but it quickly evolves as the flavor elements build in the glass. A nutty charred wood character slowly gives way to praline and then a big surprise: sweet iced tea. This sweet tea character carries over completely on the palate, where you could easily be forgiven for mistaking this for a tea-flavored vodka, brisk with brown sugar and black tea leaf notes. As the palate evolves, so do elements of coconut nectar and butterscotch. The actual pecan element remains a bit elusive, with tea remaining the predominant focus well into the gently sweet (never cloying) finish.

Unexpected, but definitely worthwhile.

70 proof.
