Flavored Vodka

Flavored vodka is simply vodka to which artificial or (increasingly) natural flavor has been added. This category exploded in popularity in the early 2000s as consumers looked for easy ways to make simple vodka drinks (such as vodka and a mixer) more interesting and flavorful. While the earliest vodka flavors revolved around citrus fruits (lemon and orange being the most popular), vodka flavors quickly devolved almost comically into oddities ranging from hemp to cinnamon rolls to menthol cigarettes. Today the category has pulled back a bit, with more artisanal infusions becoming popular that more closely resemble gin than candy.

Review: Doritos Nacho Cheese Spirit

By Christopher Null | December 21, 2023 |

You probably never thought about boozifying a nacho cheese flavored Doritos chip, did you? But you probably also never thought about turning Doritos into Taco Bell taco shells either, and now look who’s laughing. In collaboration with “global flavor innovator” Empirical, a Delaware-based operation which makes all kinds of oddball spirits, the good people at…

Review: Purity Vodkas, Gins, and Spritz (2023)

By Christopher Null | October 16, 2023 |

Best known for its out-there bottle design, Sweden’s Purity has expanded from making a single vodka to a much wider range of products, including four(!) vodkas, three gins, and a bottled spritz. Everything has been rebranded lately, though the core recipes seem not to have changed much, starting with a distillate made of organic winter wheat…

Review: Beattie’s Potato and Sweet Potato Vodkas

By Jonathan Glover | August 24, 2023 |

The designation “farm-to-table” will always receive a Bourdainian side-eye from me. It’s one of those oft-used, food-adjacent phrases like “craft,” “handmade,” and “gourmet” that are intended to evoke a specific feeling while not necessarily meaning much of anything at all. And so, here we have Beattie’s Distillers, whose slogan prominently displayed on the front label…

Review: Black Infusions Vodkas – Gold Apricot, Dark Cherry, and Black Fig

By Christopher Null | December 20, 2022 |

Black Infusions is based in Bend, Oregon, and their focus is singular: Making fruit-infused vodkas that are free of artificial colors, sugars, and flavors. Each vodka has just two ingredients, vodka and the fruit noted on the label — in this case, apricot, cherry, or fig. Given the depth of color of the spirits, those…

Review: St. George Green Chile Vodka

By Christopher Null | September 26, 2022 |

Chile-flavored vodka is typically described as usable only for Bloody Mary cocktails. And that is basically something I agree with. What else have I ever used pepper-infused vodka for? St. George’s expression of pepper vodka isn’t shy. Infused with California jalapenos, habaneros, serranos, and bell peppers, there is no shortage of capsaicin to go around…

Review: Heritage Distilling Elk Rider Vodka and Flavored Vodkas – Lavender, Huckleberry, and Coffee

By Drew Beard | August 13, 2022 |

Washington-based craft distillery Heritage Distilling is perhaps best known for their Brown Sugar Bourbon, which appears to have been sold off and become something of celebrity label after entertainer Jamie Foxx made an unspecified investment in the brand in 2021. We reviewed that original expression, along with four whiskeys and a gin, more than five…

Review: Hope Town Vodka and Lime Vodka

By Christopher Null | June 23, 2022 |

Hope Town Vodka is made in North Charleston, South Carolina by the folks who brought you Walker’s Cay Bourbon, which is to say, Steven Busch. This one is actually made in SC, not sourced from elsewhere, which is as it should be for an unaged spirit. Distilled six times. A straight vodka and, oddly, one…

Review: Finlandia Botanical Vodkas – Cucumber & Mint and Wildberry & Rose

By Christopher Null | March 16, 2022 |

We haven’t written anything about Finlandia since it launched its Fusion flavored line — over a decade ago. Now, like every vodka maker under the sun, it’s back with a new approach to flavored vodka, offering two infused vodkas that contain no artificial flavors, sweeteners, or sugars. These don’t claim to be “all natural” infusions…

Review: Viss Vodka – Ballet Blue and Blush Blossom

By Christopher Null | January 11, 2022 |

Remember how we said that fresh, organic infused vodkas were the hottest trend in the category? Well, they say the exception makes the rule, and here it is in the form of Viss, a candy-colored, heavily artificially flavored vodka that’s imbued with a sparkly substance that makes it shimmer in the bottle and in the…

Review: Belvedere Organic Infusions Vodka, Complete Lineup

By Christopher Null | January 9, 2022 |

In case you missed it, the big trend in vodka today is more complex infusions that eschew artificial flavors for real botanicals. In the case of Belvedere, it recently dropped a trio of Organic Infusions, each made with “100% organic fruits, spices and botanicals for flavor extraction, relying on the beauty of natural, simple ingredients…
