Review: Palm Republic Rums – Silver and Aged
Palm Republic Rum is part of a new vanguard of rum brands looking to bring ultra-high quality spirits to the market at a reasonable price. The secret seems to be smart blending: Source high-grade barrels from various locales and put them together to create a sophisticated finished product. This brand happens to be co-founded by Eric Winter, star of TV’s The Rookie.
Palm Republic offers two expressions at present. We reviewed them both.
Palm Republic Silver Rum Review
A blend of rums distilled in Jamaica and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It’s not indicated on the packaging or website but I presume this is lightly aged rum that has been filtered back to clear. The results are impressive. The nose is fruity with big banana notes but still sharp enough to evoke its youth, almost peppery at times. Vanilla sneaks its way into view, tempered by a light graphite quality. The palate is less biting than the nose would indicate, that banana amplified into full ice cream mode, and hitting a brown sugar stride as things come to a conclusion. A solid little mixer that punches above expectations. 80 proof. A- / $45
Palm Republic Aged Rum Review
A much more aggressive rum, blending rums from Panama, Jamaica, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, all aged up to eight years in sherry casks. The sherry isn’t shy with this rum, giving the nose a nutty, citrusy overtone alongside a fairly grassy underbelly. Smoldering on the palate, that sherry continues to rumble and push the rest of the experience around, imbuing the rum with a massive body — and quite a bit of sweetness. The big brown sugar belly on this rum undercuts the sherry, giving it a bit of a candied orange character, the finish eventually turning more saccharine than expected. Tasted neat, I felt like this clung to my palate for half an hour or more. It’s still a rousing, lively rum — but it mixes better than it drinks on its own. 92 proof. B / $50
