Review: 2021 Venus la Universal Dido Blanc
A Spanish wine with a Mediterranean bent, Dido is a white blend of Garnatxa Blanca, Macabeu, and Cartoixà, all grown in Montsant, which is on the far eastern edge of Spain, just south of France and abutting the water. Aged in a mix of barrels and cement.
Dido is one of the most unusual white wines I’ve had in a long while, a very dry experience that is almost bitter at times, featuring a highly herbal palate studded with dried florals galore. Anise notes hit first, then dried lemon and a big punch of fresh thyme. A rustic layer of coconut husks stands by on the long finish. A light suggestion of oxidation suggested Fino sherry to me the more I tasted it, though ultimately some brighter fruit tones helped to temper that suggestion, creating a complex and decidedly unique experience in the end. Very unusual stuff.
