Review: 2019 Planeta Eruzione 1614 Nerello Mascalese Sicilia DOC

Made from 100% Nerello Mascalese, this wine from our friends at Planeta presents with a bright, garnet color and a fruit-forward, spice-laced nose. Initially quite earthy on the palate, it takes some time to settle into its groove, letting notes of anise and blackberry slowly emerge, tempered by fruitier notes of spiced red raspberry but also gritty gunpowder come into focus. There’s a lot of adventure and mystery in this wine, and it takes you on a journey one doesn’t expect at the $25 price point. That said, it’s a trip worth taking. The wine really grows on you over time. Nerello Mascalese is an uncommon sight in American environs, but here’s proof we should see a bit more of it.
