Flavored Vodka

Flavored vodka is simply vodka to which artificial or (increasingly) natural flavor has been added. This category exploded in popularity in the early 2000s as consumers looked for easy ways to make simple vodka drinks (such as vodka and a mixer) more interesting and flavorful. While the earliest vodka flavors revolved around citrus fruits (lemon and orange being the most popular), vodka flavors quickly devolved almost comically into oddities ranging from hemp to cinnamon rolls to menthol cigarettes. Today the category has pulled back a bit, with more artisanal infusions becoming popular that more closely resemble gin than candy.

Review: Guillotine Vodka – Straight and Heritage Edition

By Christopher Null | January 6, 2020 |

Guillotine Vodka hails from France (where else?) where it produces two versions of the spirit. The standard vodka is, like many French vodkas, distilled from grapes, while the Heritage Edition is “aged” (their quotation marks) in Cognac and Armagnac barrels “made from very special Limousin oak.” We tried both. Let’s dig in. Mind the price…

Review: Solod Alpine Crystal and Bavarian Dark Vodka

By Christopher Null | July 5, 2019 |

Solod is a new vodka brand from the Ukraine, and it comes in two expressions, both built around (and arguably flavored with) malted barley. It’s really weird stuff (stay tuned) but, given the price point, something that might be quite appealing to cost-conscious shoppers. I don’t have a lot of data on exactly how these vodkas…

Review: Infuse Spirits Grapefruit Vodka

By Christopher Null | June 24, 2019 |

We originally encountered Infuse back in 2014 and 2015, when the company was just a producer of flavored vodkas, distinguished by its inclusion of copious amounts of solid botanicals like long lemon peels and dried peach slices placed directly in the bottle. Since then, just about everything about Infuse has changed. The company has a…

Review: Ketel One Botanical Vodkas

By Mike Gerrard | May 3, 2019 |

Netherlands-based Ketel One has long had a reputation for producing quality but inexpensive vodkas. Like the Dutch people, they don’t go in for hype  Ketel has been in business for over 300 years, and in that time they have only produced, in addition to their basic Ketel One brand, an orange vodka and a lemon…

Review: Dixie Vodka, Complete Lineup (2019)

By Christopher Null | April 18, 2019 |

We last encountered Dixie Vodka in 2014, when it was known as General Beauregard Dixie Southern Vodka. Since then, the Charleston, S.C.-based distillery has updated (and simplified) its branding, while rolling out additional flavored expressions. Everything’s still made from a mash of GMO-free corn. It’s unclear if the distillery still uses the TerrePURE system to…

Review: Greenbar Distillery Tru Vodkas, Crusoe Rums, and Slow Hand Whiskeys (2019)

By Christopher Null | March 13, 2019 |

Founded in 2004, LA-based Greenbar Distillery is a stalwart pioneer of craft distillation. We’ve covered their spirits multiple times over the years, including looks at malt whiskey, an amazing amaro, and even vodkas dating back to before the company was even called Greenbar. Today we look at six products from Greenbar, including two vodkas (which…

Review: Smirnoff Moscow Mule Ginger & Lime Infused Vodka

By Christopher Null | March 11, 2019 |

It’s not an urban myth that Smirnoff invented the Moscow Mule cocktail, so it’s fitting that “Moscow Mule” vodka would be released by the company. Now, it’s critical to note that this is not a ready-to-drink bottled cocktail but rather a vodka that is flavored with ginger and lime. “Just add ginger ale (or ginger…

Cascade Chipotle Pepper Flavored Vodka Bottle

Review: Cascade Chipotle Pepper Flavored Vodka

By Mike Gerrard | March 7, 2019 |

Having recently reviewed two salted vodkas, how appropriate that next in line was a pepper vodka, albeit of the smoked jalapeño kind, known as chipotle. It’s a sweet and spicy flavor commonly used in Mexican, Tex-Mex, and Southwest cooking. This vodka, though, comes from the Pacific Northwest, Oregon to be precise. Starting with water from…

Review: Saltworks Property Salted Vodkas

By Mike Gerrard | February 20, 2019 |

Just when you thought the flavored vodka thing was over, because every flavor under the sun had been used, along comes Saltworks Property with a range of vodkas that are flavored… with salt. Salted vodkas? Right. I do have more of a sweet tooth, but I’m open-minded, if also a little open-mouthed at the prospect. Several…

Review: Skyy Infusions Sun-Ripened Watermelon Vodka

By Christopher Null | January 1, 2019 |

It’s 2019. Is it too late to release a watermelon vodka? (Technically this came out in mid-2018, but you get the idea.) Skyy’s watermelon version of its umpteenth flavored vodka expression, and clearly it has the formula down pretty well. Here we find fresh (sun-ripened, perhaps?) watermelon on the nose, though it’s filtered through a…
