Rum is a distilled spirit traditionally made from sugarcane juice or molasses and typically aged in oak barrels, although experimentation with other barrels also takes place. Rum is most widely associated with the islands of the Caribbean and Latin American countries, but it is made in many countries around the world, including Scotland, Sweden, and the U.S. In Spanish-speaking countries rum is called ron, though no one knows for sure where the word “rum” itself was born. White or silver rum is either unaged or is lightly aged, then filtered to strip out the color; it is generally intended for use in cocktails. Gold or amber rum is aged in oak barrels, though there are no agreed upon standards on how long this term, nor any real distinction between the terms. Dark rum is usually made from caramelized molasses, aged for a longer period of time, and usually in barrels that have been more deeply charred. Overproof rum can hit up to 160 proof and is intended for use in cocktails, including the Volcano, where the overproof rum is floated on top and ignited. Spiced and flavored rums are also quite popular.

Review: Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum and XO Rum (2020)

By Christopher Null | June 2, 2020 |

Mount Gay’s Black Barrel and XO Rum expressions have both been around for some time — Black Barrel is the newbie, released originally in 2013; XO was rebranded from its original “Extra Old” some time around then too — but in 2020 the Barbados-based distillery revamped both of these venerable bottlings. (These were unveiled at…

Review: Montanya Rum Valentia 4 Years Old

By Christopher Null | April 21, 2020 |

We first encountered Montanya Distillers — an unlikely operation where Renee Newton is one of just a handful of female rum distillers, not to mention working in Colorado — way back in 2011. Recently the company released its third limited edition bottling, a “single barrel, double maturation release that celebrates the progress of women in…

Reviews: Virago Four Port Rum, Port Cask-Finished Rum, and Modern Gin

By Drew Beard | April 19, 2020 |

Virago Spirits is a very young craft distillery, opening just two years ago in the hip Scott’s Addition neighborhood of Richmond, Virginia. The distillery was started by three brothers, Barry, Brad, and Bart Haneberg (seriously), with a focus seemingly on anything but whiskey, which is rare for a craft distillery but not exactly unwise given…

Review: Hotel Tango Rum and Bourbon

By Christopher Null | April 14, 2020 |

Hotel Tango is a new operation in Indianapolis, Indiana, and its military canteen-inspired bottle and label designs are killer. (They’re also intentional, as HT is the first combat-disabled, veteran-owned distillery in the U.S.) The distillery makes a wide range of spirits — nine at current count — ranging from bourbon to limoncello. Today we taste…

Review: Dictador Solera System Rum 12 Years Old

By Christopher Null | April 6, 2020 |

This bottling of Columbia-distilled Dictador is courtesy Flaviar’s new spirits club. Despite the significant age, this is actually one of Dictador’s youngest rums — if not its very youngest. Dictador 12 is made from “the fermentation of virgin sugar cane honey distilled partly in copper alembic and partly in steel continuous column, to achieve a…

Review: Sabor Dominicano Mamajuana

By Christopher Null | March 19, 2020 |

I was delighted to discover — if only so I could say it out loud — the unique beverage Mamajuana (sometimes Mama Juana) on a recent visit to the Dominican Republic. Dating back to the 1950s, Mamajuana is the unofficial national beverage of the Dominican, an odd combination of rum, honey, and red wine that…

Review: TOPO Vodka, Wheat Whiskey, and Spiced Rum (2020)

By Drew Beard | March 16, 2020 |

We tasted the clear spirits of Top of the Hill Distillery (TOPO), including their white whiskey, way back in 2013. The Chapel Hill, North Carolina-based distillery has been hard at work tweaking, adding new products, and barrel-aging their whiskey since then, so we thought we would check in on their latest offerings. TOPO is one…

Review: Grander Rye Finished Panama Rum

By Christopher Null | March 13, 2020 |

Grander Rum got its start back in 2015, kicking its brand off with an outstanding 8 year old expression. Now the brand is launching its first limited edition series, called the Barrel Series. Entry number one is this bottling, a blend of Panama-distilled stock, 65% 12 years old and 35% 15 years old, then finished…

Review: The Rum Cooperative Blended Rum Vol. 2

By Christopher Null | March 11, 2020 |

Bully Boy Distillers’ original Rum Cooperative blended rum, released just a few months ago, was a delightful oddity, a mashup of rum sourced from five different countries. Now, Volume 2 has arrived, and it’s also a blend from five nations — only one of which coincides with the quintet from Volume 1. Here’s what you’ll…
