Rated B-

Reviews of spirits, wine, and beer (and various errata like mixers and garnishes) comprise more than 80% of the content at Drinkhacker, and at the B- level we begin to shy away from recommending these products except in relatively uncommon circumstances or for certain types of drinkers. On a five-star scale, these products would score 2.5 stars. On the traditional 100-point scale popular with many wine and spirits graders, these products would merit scores of 79 to 82 points.

Review: Milagro Tequila – Silver and Reposado (2008)

By Christopher Null | March 6, 2008 |

I tried two of Milagro’s tequilas today (the silver and the reposado; didn’t have the anejo). Rather disappointing on the whole. Both are 80 proof. Milagro Tequila Silver (2008) – The Silver is a traditional, 100% agave blanco tequila, but it’s awfully harsh, even for a silver. Most super-premium, traditional silvers are surprisingly smooth, but…

Review: Gran Gala Orange Liqueur

By Christopher Null | February 24, 2008 |

We did a rare experiment tonight and put Gran Gala to blind test vs. the liqueur it’s designed to imitate: Grand Marnier. This Italian liqueur even has the red ribbon and circular wax seal, just like Grand Marnier, and it promises it’s blended from “triple orange essence from the choicest oranges from Sicily.” So, how’d…

Review: Pendleton Canadian Whisky 10 Years Old (2008)

By Christopher Null | February 5, 2008 |

Got a sweet tooth? Have I got a whiskey for you. Pendleton’s Canadian blended whisky (they spell it without the E) is aged for 10 years in barrels and bottled at 80 proof. Oddly, it is made from Oregon water and bottled in Oregon, to boot… yet it’s a Canadian whisky. Go figure. Sip #1…

Review: Turi Vodka

By Christopher Null | February 2, 2008 |

Türi is Estonia’s only vodka exported to the U.S. For that, it’s got some novelty cred. But I’m not entirely sure it’s worth the $20 a bottle it costs… if you can find it at all. Türi is another rye-based vodka, but it isn’t the flavor that immediately hits you: Türi is especially thick and…

Review: Cheerz IntelliShot Supplement

By Christopher Null | January 2, 2008 |

Hangovers. I don’t like ’em. You don’t like ’em. Hangover remedies are legion, of course, but those with the most promise are the ones that promise you never get the hangover to begin with. Enter Cheerz,  a little shot-sized vial of green liquid that, when consumed while you drink alcohol, promises to eliminate hangovers and…

Review: Old Whiskey River Bourbon 6 Years Old

By Christopher Null | December 26, 2007 |

Looking for a bourbon you can knock back — the better part of bottle, really — and never notice you were drinking it? Meet your match. Old Whiskey River is perhaps the smoothest whiskey I’ve ever had. I was shocked to see it was 86 proof. It could have been iced tea for all I…

Review: Playboy Energy Drink

By Christopher Null | November 22, 2007 |

Considering the amount of Red Bull that’s likely consumed on the premises of the Playboy Mansion, making his own Playboy Energy Drink would probably save Hef enough money that it’d be a good business venture even if they didn’t sell it to the public. Besides, the world might quit spinning if it failed to churn…

Review: Jones Soda Christmas Pack 2007

By Christopher Null | November 19, 2007 |

Yes, Virginia, there is life beyond Mountain Dew. Renown for its Turkey & Gravy and Brussels Sprouts carbonated concoctions released for the holidays, Jones Soda (motto: “I dare you.”) has come up with two new packs for 2007, one for Christmas and one for Chanukah, each containing four bottles of curiously holiday-flavored soda. In this…

Review: 267 Infusions Vodka Cranberry

By Christopher Null | November 13, 2007 |

Maybe you’ve seen these guys at liquor stores: Squished, stretched-out bottles with fruit floating inside. You can’t help but pick one of 267 Infusions’ eight flavored spirits up. Though 267 will tell you it’s infused, not flavored. I’ve tried three of 267’s vodka-based spirits, orange and lemon infusions, and now Vodka Cranberry. Some thoughts on…

Review: Wild Turkey American Spirit Bourbon 15 Years Old

By Christopher Null | November 10, 2007 |

I came to Wild Turkey’s latest bottling, American Spirit, with much excitement: It’s a 15-year-old bonded bourbon, 100 proof, produced in small batches, and limited to 24,000 bottles worldwide. What’s not to like? Unfortunately, there’s not much excitement once it hits the glass. This is an easy-sipping bourbon, but its vanilla, caramel, and woody flavors…
