Review: Frank August Bourbon

Have you already heard of Frank August? Then you are at least a few steps ahead of this writer; I recently came across it at my brother’s house, where he’d brought a bottle home from BevMo strictly based on the staff recommendation. This usually incites an involuntary raising of eyebrows, but the bottle is sleek and gorgeous and it was hard to resist cracking it open to give it a once over for Drinkhacker. Frank August’s website is also sleek and gorgeous but I can’t say there was a lot of information to glean, despite claims of “being open, honest, and sincere.” What we do know it’s sourced Kentucky straight bourbon and… that’s it. No mashbill, no age statement, likely blended.

But let’s press on.

The nose is classically structured and promising, with inviting notes of cinnamon, vanilla, and mint. Some complexity is added with approachable accents of tangy green apple juice and caramel crème chocolate truffles. On the palate, the sip is refreshing and spicy with a mint-forward cinnamon kick that livens up a rather understated sweetness of burnt butter cookies. The minty tang lingers in the finish, ultimately giving way to familiar soft cereal notes that ultimately wash clean, letting you start all over again. It’s altogether a well-balanced pour across the board with solid showing of bourbon’s greatest hits of flavor, with the right level of spice and subtle sweetness on tap.

100 proof seems to sit nicely with this whiskey, though the finish feels relatively less punchy, making me if it could have been better served at a slightly higher proof. I’m deeply curious what a barrel proof release would look like. As it stands, there’s nothing fancy or edgy here, just a solid and well-crafted bourbon that reflects the underlying craftmanship of the undisclosed source distillery. The premium $75 pricetag may give one pause, however.
