Today we road-test the latest rendition of stemless plastic reusable wine “glasses” from Govino. They’ve been around since 2008, so it’s likely that many in the wine community are already familiar with their line of stemless plastic drinking vessels. Per their website, these apparently are the “best Govino ever” glasses, and are shatterproof, BPA-free, and dishwasher safe.
I actually first came across them at a party hosted by my sister-in-law about 10 years ago, and recalled how clever I thought stemless glasses were for serving wine at casual events where guests are mingling about instead of seated as for a dinner party. I even found myself unoffended that it was plastic. Alongside the divot, allowing for more natural and secure handling of the glasses, I was an instant fan, and the following Christmas she gifted us with two four-piece sets. I am still a fan and have embraced the greater peace of mind when hosting parties using lightweight, reusable, and shatterproof vessels that have a graceful and practical shape to them. So the review of the recent version is going to be straightforward: love them, highly recommend them, you won’t regret it.
As for the self-proclamation of these latest products being the “best Govino ever”, truth be told earlier versions of products did have some limitations, notably that they were billed as shatterproof and BPA-free, but were not dishwasher-safe. The original was thinner and certainly did not hold its shape in the dishwasher if you put one in anyway: We found out the hard way. The current version is noticeably and impressively thicker and sturdier in comparison, holding its shape find in my test-wash. We still use and love our original set of now-wonky Govinos, but the improvement is welcomed.
Govino also offers rocks and highball glasses, and even a decanter set with lid. It’s worth checking out their full line for the gift-giving season.
