Review: Famiglia Pasqua Mai Dire Mai 2015 Valpolicella and 2013 Amarone

We’ve been covering the wines of Famiglia Pasqua for years now, and are excited to dig into its latest Mai Dire Mai Valpolicella bottling (at the bottom of the quality pyramid) as well as its Amarone (near the top). Both are worth your attention

2015 Famiglia Pasqua Mai Dire Mai Valpolicella Superiore DOC – Bright and well-fruited, almost jammy, this wine provides all the intense plum, currant, and raisin notes you expect from this style, with layers of anise and dark chocolate adding some nuance. The finish is driven more by raspberry than the raisin you might expect, with touches of black tea and a light balsamic note tempering any lingering sweetness. A- / $46

2013 Famiglia Pasqua Mai Dire Mai Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG – Rich and immersive, yet wholly approachable, this is Amarone doing what Amarone does best. A plump and juicy attack kicks things off with a tartness that is more cherry and raspberry than raisin, but it’s quickly chased away by a rush of tannins and a persistent note of anise. Chewy with a lush mouthfeel but also quite bracing as the finish arrives, the wine cuts a silky silhouette on the tongue with razor sharp edges. Hard to put down and — unlike a lot of Amarone — quite versatile. A / $85
