Review: Deschutes Brewery Symphonic Chronic Double Dank IPA
With its latest release, Deschutes says you can forget about your session brews and go big. Symphonic Chronic is a hybrid of west coast and hazy IPA styles, produced as a double IPA with a mountain of hops: Citra, Chinook, CTZ, Mosaic, Simcoe, and Idaho 7. Moderately sweet with a pleasant mix of florals, applesauce, a juicy citrus, the beer takes a tropical spin as it develops in the glass. That said, it’s not particularly “dank” — and definitely not what I’d describe as “double dank” — though the bitter earthiness of the hops are never far from focus. Altogether it’s a well-balanced IPA between east and west coast styles… I mean, ignoring the powerful amount of alcohol in it.
