Review: 2021 Penner-Ash Pinot Noir Willamette Valley
Penner-Ash has long been a blue chip winery in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, and this 2021 shows why. Bright and acidic, the wine bursts out of the gate with notes of cherry and strawberry, the latter of which adds a light touch of spring to the proceedings. It’s gently alighted with notes of cherry cola and vanilla, both of which add a deft amount of youthful ripeness to a well-balanced, extremely food-friendly wine. Slightly ashy notes of cloves and bramble cling to the experience throughout, however, keeping all that fruit in check. Clean with lingering, buttery vanilla on the finish, I could understand how this might lean a bit too far on the sweet side for some drinkers when sipping solo, but when paired with most meals it will serve as a lovely foil for the evening.
