Review: Remy Martin XO Cognac
We’re way behind on reviewing the standard edition expressions of Cognac from Remy Martin, but today we take a step toward remedying that with a look at the iconic Remy Martin XO, once of the most widely available and consumed XO brandies on the market.
As Cognac goes, it’s about as harmless and straightforward as they come — and that’s not a slight. The nose is sweet and rich, with notes of coffee, then raisiny mixed fruit notes that feel filtered through an oxidized, oloroso sherry character. Slightly dusty and earthy as it develops in the glass, the brandy takes on a tone of orange peel later in the game.
That initial sweetness roars back to life on the palate, reprising notes of raisin and chocolate and a metric ton of spice, all very festive. More classic linen and lavender florals come into focus soon after, becoming dominant before a lingering citrus note comes forward on the pretty finish. Some cleansing acidity helps to keep all that lip-smacking sweetness in check — and ensure that you are getting 100% what you expect with every last sip of this spirit.
80 proof.
