Merry Edwards‘ summer wine releases are upon us, with typically delightful results. Today we look at a collection of four wines.
2020 Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley – An iconic, brilliant example of California sauvignon blanc at its best. Bright lemon pairs well with soothing coconut, green fig, and hints of ruby red grapefruit. Plump from start to finish, with just a touch of herbaceousness and clean linen notes. 2020 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Russian River Valley – A fairly classic if uncomplicated expression of Russian River pinot, in fact one that’s a bit on the lighter side — which is a good thing. Notes of fig dominate, with cherry and strawberry underneath. A touch doughy, with a creamier texture than expected — again, not a bad thing. B+ / $65 [BUY IT NOW FROM TOTAL WINE]
2020 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast – Mild but earthy, with overtones of green olive, thyme, and rosemary, this is a more savory style of pinot noir, in keeping with the distinctly cool weather of the Sonoma Coast. Slightly tight and scattered today, this will likely benefit from a few years in cellar to mellow out and showcase its more brooding black fruit qualities with more of a sense of balance — today offering somewhat blunt notes of lingering tea leaf, a touch of clove, and hints of turned earth. B+ / $60 [BUY IT NOW FROM TOTAL WINE]
2020 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Meredith Estate – The heartiest and most complex wine in the group, this single vineyard offering shows dense cherry and spice giving way to notes of olive leaf and some turned earth, fused into a rich but fruit-forward experience. The wine is layered with notes of licorice, raspberry, dark chocolate, and some coffee bean, developing continually as it simmers in the glass. finishing on a sultry touch of gently smoked oak. A gorgeous wine. A / $90 [BUY IT NOW FROM TOTAL WINE]
