Review: Gary Farrell 2019 Chardonnay and 2018 Pinot Noir Single Vineyard Selections

We looked at these identical bottlings from Gary Farrell a year ago, only one vintage prior, respectively. Now they’re updated and back. Back into the fold we go!

2019 Gary Farrell Chardonnay Russian River Valley Olivet Lane Vineyard – Creamy, with lightly lemony notes running to apple, caramel, and lingering vanilla notes. The citrus doesn’t hold back on this one, lemon and blood orange brightening up the pushy, creamy palate. There’s a finish of guava that lingers just about forever, spiked gently with lemon peel. A- / $50

2018 Gary Farrell Pinot Noir Russian River Valley Hallberg Vineyard – Still a delight, and less overtly sweet than I recall from last year. Iconic RRV pinot notes meld dark cherries, blackberries, turned earth, and cloves into a tart but seductive mix, making for a significantly different presentation vs. the 2017 vintage. Some balsamic on the finish isn’t unwelcome, but give this wine a slight chill before drinking for best results. A- / $55 [BUY IT NOW FROM TOTAL WINE]
