Review: Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Batch A122 (January 2022)

After a pair of killer releases in 2021, can the Elijah Craig Barrel Proof series keep the magic going with this first release for 2022?

Good news: ECBP Batch A122 is a surprising delight, with plenty of trademark fruit and spice throughout the experience. Things kick off with an aromatic punch of nutmeg and cloves, plenty of barrel char, and some well-toasted marshmallow elements. Some dark baking chocolate notes linger in the glass, giving it a certain appealing dryness.

The palate sees the whiskey’s fruitier elements quickly emerging: red apple, currants, some raisin notes, all well-impregnated with baking spice and more of that toasty char. I get an (elevated) fruitcake character from the bourbon, caramel apple clinging to the tongue alongside more char, dark chocolate, and some red pepper. It’s a hot whiskey, but one that retains a solid approachability throughout, a mildly drying finish being the only real detractor.

All told: A122 stands as another solid release from this extensive series that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

120.8 proof.
