Pop Quiz! Nah, I don’t have any actual questions for you, just this cocktail recipe created in 2010 by Devon Tarby of New York’s infamous Death & Company. As the story goes, someone challenged her to create a cocktail that used mole bitters (hence the name). Which, well, I’m not sure that’s much of a challenge for a capable bartender, let alone a bartender at one of the most renowned craft cocktail bars on the planet. But I digress.
This one is a simple take on the eternally appealing Old Fashioned with just a half measure of of one of our favorite amari, Ramazzotti Amaro, to bolster the bourbon and a bit of simple syrup to round out the sweetness. Oh, and those mole bitters that inspired the whole thing from the get-go. Simple and delicious and a nice change up from the conventional Old Fashioned. Try it and let us know what you think!
2 oz. bourbon
½ oz. Ramazzotti Amaro
1 tsp. simple syrup
2 dashes mole bitters
Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass over ice and stir until well-chilled. Strain into an Old Fashioned glass over a large ice cube and garnish with an expressed orange peel.
