Book Review: Dressed to Swill: Runway Ready Cocktails Inspired by Fashion Icons

The extent to which I actively participate in the fashion universe typically begins and ends with songs from David Bowie and the Kinks. So, while I am most certainly not the target audience for Dressed to Swill, author/editor Jennifer Croll and illustrator Daiana Ruiz do an excellent job inventing cocktail recipes inspired by fashion icons ranging from legends to their muses. Along with beautiful illustrations of each cocktail’s inspiration, there are brief and informative biographies to read along with while sipping. This proves highly useful for non-fashion-conscious people.

The recipes themselves are straightforward, minimal, and provide little challenge for seasoned cocktail makers, but there are surprises to be found in their simplicity. The crème de violette-Champagne-lavender combo of the Coco Chanel is a welcome alternative to fruit-heavy seasonal options, and the aloe vera-gin-crème de cassis of the Rei Kawakubo is a tribute worthy of Kawakubo’s avant-garde visionary works. While certainly not for everyone, Dressed to Swill does its job well and could provide the basis for many a themed party centered around fashion shows, red carpet pre-show award gatherings, or even a well-constructed photoshoot for the hidden social media influencer lodged somewhere inside all of us.
