Review: Procera Gin

Review: Procera Gin

Distilled in Nairobi, Kenya, Procera harvests botanicals from countries across Africa. Additionally, the base spirit comes from Kenyan sugar cane which grows around Lake Victoria, the source of the Nile River. Altogether, this makes for a distinctively African gin. The most notable ingredient in the gin is the one from which it draws its name, Juniperus Procera, a juniper variety indigenous to the highlands of Kenya, which here is used fresh and not dried, as is typically the case. Also in the mix of 11 total botanicals:

  • Pink Peppercorn from Madagascar
  • Coriander and Orris Root from Morocco
  • Juniper, Swahili Lime, Pixie Orange, and Green Tea from Kenya
  • Acacia Honey from Somalia
  • Cardamom and Mace from Zanzibar
  • Selim Pepper from Nigeria

The gin includes a beautiful presentation with a hand-blown bottle, African leather neck wrapping, and a hand-crafted palm wood top. Let’s give it a try.

The nose starts with gentle juniper and lime, followed by a less distinct herbal note. On the palate, lime is present but it takes a backseat to juniper which is more dominant and arrives with a lovely, oily mouthfeel. Cardamom notes follow, introducing bold mint and eucalyptus, and the finish showcases pepper, giving it a spicy kick.

This is a well-rounded gin from start to finish that is at its best when sipped straight from the glass. In a gin & tonic, it is still solid, but the distinctive flavors of the individual botanicals become muted, and I found the same to be true when I tried it in a martini. Sipped neat, the higher proof showcases Procera Gin’s botanicals, which come together beautifully without adulteration. This is an expensive gin, but for serious gin fans, it is definitely worth trying.

88 proof.
