Review: Firestone Walker Mind Haze Citrus Cyclone, Hopical Crush, and Tiki Smash

If there’s one thing (besides quality) Firestone Walker can hang their hat on, it’s the ability to thematically put together a variety twelve-pack of their offerings which make sense and are easy to enjoy from to the next without facing abrupt transitions. This time around, they’ve gone tropical with a trio of flavored IPAs.

Each clocks in at 6.2% abv

Firestone Walker Mind Haze Citrus Cyclone IPA – A wonderful balance of hops and tangerine run throughout, joined by a light wave of freshly cut grass and honey on the nose. There’s a bit of passion fruit and melon towards the finish, but this is easy sipping and the best of the three. Dangerously easy to drink, and one of the better fruit-heavy beers I’ve had in 2021. A

Firestone Walker Mind Haze Hopical Crush IPA – The original Mind Haze blend of hops mixed with pineapple and orange. Loads of tropical and stone fruit run throughout with a touch of coconut and biscuit arriving for the finish. It’s a very crisp finish that is quite easygoing. Think of a mai tai mixed with an IPA, and you’ll get the idea. A-

Firestone Walker Mind Haze Tiki Smash IPA – Incredibly coconut heavy, this would be too much to bear were it not for the generous amount of hops thrown into the mix. Notes of lemon, lime, pineapple, and of course, coconut are all heavy on the palate. There’s a mild pine resin note on the finish, but it doesn’t hang around for long. It’s a fun experiment, but easily the most difficult of the trio to endure. A bit of a wipeout in an otherwise impressive set. C
