Review: 2019 Truth and Valor Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
Truth and Valor is a Paso Robles winery focusing heavily on cabernet sauvignon and zinfandel. Today we look at two of those cabs, both from the 2019 vintage.
2019 Truth and Valor Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles – Big and a bit pruny, this is a classically constructed California cab, bold with currants and some light, plump raisin notes, fading into elements of cloves and dark chocolate. A bit sweet, and thinner than the Reserve bottling, but equally expressive with its rich fruitiness, though lighter notes of herbs and some herbal greenery elements tend to perk up on the conclusion. B+ / $21
2019 Truth and Valor Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Paso Robles Santa Margarita Ranch – Aggressive notes of black cherry, currants, and baking spice give this wine both an opulence and an approachability. Lightly sweet and rich in body, with ubiquitous, plump berry notes, if there ever was a tannic backbone in this wine it disintegrated early on, leaving behind just a mild layer of licorice candy and bittersweet chocolate. Notes of violets perk up late into the finish, adding the lightest layer of nuance to an otherwise straightforward — but well-priced — cab. A- / $35
