Review: 2020 Villa Gemma Colline Teatine and Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo
Villa Gemma is the centerpiece of the Masciarelli empire, making largely affordable, summer-friendly wines like this pair, a 2020 vintage white blend and rose.
2020 Villa Gemma Colline Teatine Bianco – A blend of Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, Cocciola, and Chardonnay. This starbright, intensely acidic wine offers a refreshing note of peaches and lemon, muddled with white flowers and just a hint of vanilla. Floral honeysuckle lingers on the end, tempering the otherwise intense minerality of the wine. A- / $20
2020 Villa Gemma Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo Superiore – A rose of 100% Montepulciano grapes. Fruit-laden but tempered by its acidic, saline-heavy structure, gentle notes of hibiscus give the wine an enigmatic delicacy. It offers a lengthy, biting finish — but you’re best advised to drink it quite cold. The wine gums up a bit as it warms. B+ / $18
