Review: 2018 Robert Mondavi Chardonnay Napa Valley

It doesn’t get much more iconic than this, one of the wines that put California on the map: Napa Valley chardonnay from Robert Mondavi. Things have changed a lot since Mondavi started his winery in 1966, and today this chardonnay checks a lot of the boxes expected of a California “chardy.” That said, it has its own spin on the style. While initially quite oaky and forward with notes of vanilla and toasted wood, the wine settles down to showcase some interesting nuances not often found in this price band: Coconut, gooseberry, and honeydew melon are all in attendance, with a hint of sesame oil lingering on the finish — all of which work well to balance out the more prototypical elements of the wine.
