Review: Novo Fogo Sparkling Caipirinha Cocktails
Cachaca producer Novo Fogo recently “rebranded, repackaged, and refined” its line of canned sparkling caipirinhas, which now includes three flavors, now featuring less sugar in the mix. The company’s silver Brazilian cachaca is the base for all of the products, with all natural ingredients used for flavoring. We tried the trio in their new incarnations. Let’s taste.
Each is 8.2% abv.
Novo Fogo Sparkling Caipirinha Cocktail Original Lime – The petrol notes of cachaca come through clearly, with a slightly bitter lime peel and, especially, lime leaf component. Very lightly sweet on the finish; frankly it could use a bit more. Tastes like an authentic, if simplistic, version of a sparkling caipirinha. B
Novo Fogo Sparkling Caipirinha Cocktail Passion Fruit and Lime – The passion fruit syrup gives this cocktail a brighter sweetness, a lively fruitiness, and a tropical hint on the finish. The lime endures beyond the passion fruit, however, come across as slightly sour on the back end. B+
Novo Fogo Sparkling Caipirinha Cocktail Mango and Lime – The sweetest of the bunch and, frankly, the best. The mango is suitably sweet but just short of candylike, while the lime and more rustic cachaca notes complement the tropical character, balancing it out. It’s fresh up front, a bit more brooding in the back end — and pretty easy to slurp down. A-
