Review: 2018 Baileyana Chardonnay and Pinot Noir

Baileyana is a big producer in Edna Valley, which is centered on San Luis Obispo. It comprises a number of brands and sub-brands, which we’ll be writing about over the next few weeks.

Let’s take a look at a pair of new releases from this cool climate producer.

2018 Baileyana Firepeak Chardonnay Edna Valley – A straightforward chardonnay, this fairly simple expression of the grape, though it has a sour edge to it, with hint of guava and gooseberry in the mix. A toasted coconut element lingers on the finish, though never enough to overcome the tart composition, which features a significant and lasting lemon peel note,. B / $20

2018 Baileyana Firepeak Pinot Noir Edna Valley – This pinot noir is quiet and wholly approachable, an exploration of cola, tea leaf, and a gentle raspberry character weaving throughout. Light notes of cherry and a touch of leather give the back end a bit more nuance, but the overall construction is straightforward and — to be sure — quite quaffable. The body remains quite light, but the finish has enough grip to keep things on the serious side. A- / $22
