Review: Chronic Cellars 2019 Rose and 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon

Chronic Cellars is a cheeky brand from Paso Robles best known for its fanciful product names. Here’s a look at two new releases from the outfit.

2019 Chronic Cellars Pink Pedals Rose – 100% grenache. Strawberry juice in a bottle, this ultra-fruity rose is dripping with berry notes, sweet cream, and an edge of vanilla. Sweet to the point where it’s almost unctuous, the wine fades into a peach-heavy character on the finish, which ultimately becomes a bit cloying on the lengthy conclusion. B- / $15

2018 Chronic Cellars Sir Real Cabernet Sauvignon – A big blackberry punch leads the way to notes of black cherry and some tea leaf, with notes of tobacco and cola, and a lingering dark chocolate element. The flavors are there, but the wine lacks the gravity of a more typical cabernet, and never quite backs up the sultry fruitiness with the punch it needs to keep things afloat. B / $15
