Review: NV Segura Viudas Brut Reserva Heredad Cava (2020)

Review: NV Segura Viudas Brut Reserva Heredad Cava (2020)

Ever feel like you’re paying for a bottle rather than what’s inside? At no time will that be more likely than when you crack open a bottle of Segura Viudas Reserva, one of the most striking bottles of cava on the market.

We last encountered the pewter-clad sparkler in 2016, and though this is still a nonvintage offering we thought it was time to take a fresh look at this ultra-fresh wine.

In 2020, Segura Viudas’s Reserva presents itself as a light-bodied and lightly fizzy offering with notes of lemon and melon swirled together up top. Increasingly creamy as it develops in the glass, it takes on a classic apple/pear note, though here it’s a bit more sour than I remembered. That throws the balance of the wine off a little, but not enough to make it unlovable.

Does this wine go bad? We were given a couple of bottles but have no idea how old they are.

All wine goes bad eventually. You’d have to open it and taste it to see if it’s still any good!

I have had a bottle of this for around 20 years, here’s hoping it still is good!!
