Review: 2017 Quinta da Fonte Souto Branco and Tinto
Quinta da Fonte Souto is another Portuguese table wine brand from the Portmeisters at Symington. These 2017 releases include one red and one white, both blends. (The two on the right pictured above are reviewed below.)
2017 Quinta da Fonte Souto Branco White Alentejo DOC – This blend of 75% arinto and 25% verdelho comes across initially like a chardonnay, with a buttery, almond-like character that feels decidedly New World in composition. With time in glass it reveals some strong florals, notes of melon, and an odd saline character, all of which make for a complex, if somewhat confusing, experience. B / $25
2017 Quinta da Fonte Souto Tinto Red Alentejo DOC – A blend of 40% alicante bouschet, 25% trincadeira, 15% cabernet sauvignon, 10% syrah, and 10% alfrocheiro. Blunt and a bit balsamic, this chewy, earthy red is a bit of a mutt, offering notes of mushroom and candied berries in equal proportion. The finish hints at green pepper and licorice, and it shows far better with a savory meal than it does solo. B- / $25
