Review: 2015 Primus The Blend Apalta

Primus is an ever-changing blend, and for the 2015 vintage it consists of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 24% Carménère, 8% Petit Verdot, and 3% Cabernet Franc. We last encountered it — in a much different blend — way back in 2012. Hailing from the Colchagua Valley’s Apalta region, this is a cult wine that’s priced like an everyday table bottling. Read on.

Primus 2015 has an incredible depth, loaded with chocolate and cassis. There’s an unusual botanical and spicy element here, a curious edge that hints at a bounty of elements ranging from honeysuckle to wet earth, dried flowers to toasted coconut. Again and again I went back to Primus to pick out new flavors and experiences, and again and again I found myself surprised. This is a rare wine where a single bottle at a single moment probably isn’t enough to tell its whole story. An amazing value at this price.

I buy it at SAN’s club in NJ. But I guess it is available quite widely.
