Quintero Panetelas – Do not be deceived by the size of this cigar, this is a medium/full-bodied offering demanding complete attention right from the first draw. Robust wood is the dominant flavor, along with a generous helping of leather and pepper. There are mild notes of dark cocoa nibs and vanilla during the middle, but these are muted due to the heaviness of the cigar’s cedar and leather. It’s a steady but quick burn of around 30 minutes, so those expecting a longer session will be mildly disappointed. At this price point, though, it’s hard to debate about a quality/cost ratio. This certainly delivers the goods.

Drink – Espresso. Any quality espresso will work here, really. I brewed the Titan Espresso Blend from Hyperion Coffee Company. With the faster burn time and heavy wood flavor from the cigar, the espresso mellows out some of the harsher notes and moves things along nicely.

Music – Kamasi Washington – Heaven & Earth – One of the brightest new talents on the jazz scene, Washington’s star burns brightly on this ambitious three-disc affair, with a talented ensemble, inventive playing, and brilliant arrangements that will make the staunchest of jazz purists applaud with joy. There’s something for everyone here: classic west coast, be-bop, Caribbean, Latin and orchestral jazz all rolled into one ambitious release. One of the best records, regardless of genre, in 2018.
