Review: Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka

Review: Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka

deep eddy lemonI love that Austin-based Deep Eddy makes flavored vodkas that look like flavored vodkas, all bright colors, with nothing to hide. The latest expression, Deep Eddy Lemon, looks like a glass of fresh lemonade, translucent and golden and flecked with just a tiny bit of pulp.

The nose plays it cool. Light, slightly sour-smelling lemon plus a bit of orange — more like Meyer lemon — with hints of a sugar. The body is more tart than I expected based on the gentle aroma, offering a sweet-and-sour kick up front that fades into a sort of brown sugar character as the finish builds. The back end offers more of a classic vodka kicker, slightly astringent and just bold enough to muscle past those brisk lemonade notes, if only for a few seconds.

Think of it as limoncello light and try it with lots of ice and something sparkling (be it soda or Prosecco) on a hot day this summer.

70 proof.

Head Up… Something has CHANGED and not for the better. I was introduced to Deep Eddy while visiting Dallas TX in Sept 2104. Ruby Red Grapefruit was the first to try… then upon returning to Raleigh NC I was able to purchase both RRGrapefruit and then the Lemon “infused” vodka. I have to say.. as a LOYAL CONSUMER…. ever since the company sold out I have seen a MAJOR flavor change in the lemon flavor. I purchased two bottles of LEMON and upon opening it, it tasted like gasoline or spoiled. I ended up taking both bottles back to our local ABC store for a refund/exchange.

Either they have changed the formula, or a disgruntled employee pissed in it – NO KIDDING.. it was not worth drinking. Now the Mini-Lemons taste good. In further investigation the liter size is not the translucent yellow it once was.. it is murky and taste god-awful. There was even muck settling in the bottom of several of the bottles at the store. People who have not been purchasing it as long as I have would not know the difference but Deep Eddy has change it or someone has made a bad batch. Maybe bad lemon oils or as said earlier an old employee got revenge after losing their job after the buy out.

One other recommendation.. dont bother mixing it with club soda as it states… the stuff is perfect (was perfect) just alone over ice.

I am a little skittish to purchase even the RubyRed Grapefruit. Please fix it Deep Eddy or you will lose sales, if not already.
