Review: Absolut Hibiskus Vodka

ABSOLUT HIBISKUS vodkaHibiscus flowers are the improbable Next Big Thing in spirits flavoring, and now Absolut is getting into the business with this new vodka, continuing the succession of equally improbably-spelled liquors.

Absolut Hibiskus is infused not just with hibiscus flower but also with pomegranate, a wise choice that gives this vodka some much-needed sweetness. Absolut’s flavored vodkas, bottled at 80 proof, tend to be a bit burly and rough around the edges, making their flavor components somewhat difficult to perceive well.

Hibiskus is a switch-up. The nose offers bright berry flavors, a just a touch of a floral element. On the tongue, more of the same: The pomegranate is indistinctly fruity, part cherry, part strawberry, and the floral element is faint to the point of being almost an afterthought that you catch on the back of your palate as you swallow. The finish is biting but not unpleasant, again a hallmark of the Absolutiverse.

In all fairness this should be called Absolut Pomigranit but that’d likely get lost between Absolut Cherrykran and Absolut Berry Acai. Use accordingly. (The company suggests cranberry or grapefruit juice as a mixer.)

80 proof.
