Brandy Gin Rum Whiskey

Esquire’s Best Cheap Booze

Share

I expect to see lots of recession-minded lifestyle coverage in the upcoming months. Esquire magazine doesn’t disappoint with this roundup of the best cheap spirits — stuff that’s affordable but which you wouldn’t mind actually serving to guests. The winners: Paul Masson Grande Amber VSOP brandy, Brugal Anejo rum, White Horse Scotch, Gordon’s gin, and Evan Williams Black Label bourbon — a bottling that invariably wins the “cheap bourbon” roundup every time I’ve seen it done. Note to self: Get a fresh bottle and check it out. It’s only 12 bucks!

(Also worth noting from the piece: Never drink cheap tequila!)

It’s not online, only in print (Obama’s on the cover)… if they eventually add it online I’ll add the link, though!

I used to like Gordon’s gin, but it’s lost its appeal for me. I guess it’s just me, but I find a sour note to it that has grown off-putting over time. For cheap gin, I’ve come to prefer the Trader Joe’s house brand, at $8 a great value for the quality.

The American Gordon’s has the flavor of European Gordon’s but is much lower quality aka a headache in a bottle. Its crap I wont drink it.

Booth’s is the same as Gordon’s headache in a bottle doesnt have the crispness or flavor of Gordons but is 90 proof. More crap.

Bombay Sapphire is overrated and not worth the price though it is better than Gordon’s. Beefeaters is a solid clean gin with a mellow flavor profile less ‘cottony’ than Sapphire.

I dont know what to do for cheap gin, I’ll have to work my way through it until I find the sweet spot. But the sweet spot aint with Gordons I can promise you.
