Recipe: Hot Buttered Rum

What we’re drinking this evening in the Christmas aftermath, recipe courtesy of Ron Atlantico. (There are of course dozens of variations on Hot Buttered Rum, but Atlantico’s is pretty tasty.)

Hot Buttered Rum
1 stick unsalted butter, softened
2 cups light brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
Pinch ground cloves
Pinch salt
Bottle of Ron Atlantico
Boiling water

In a bowl, cream together the butter, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Refrigerate until almost firm. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the butter mixture into 12 small mugs. Pour about 3 ounces of rum into each mug (filling about halfway). Top with boiling water (to fill the remaining half), stir well, and serve immediately.

You might use less than 3 ounces of rum per glass if you want to have any hope of keeping your wits around you after one helping. Atlantico’s photo (below) is far more attractive than mine… what with it served in a coffee mug from a dead dot-com magazine.

This looks fantastic… Are there any rums similar to Atlantico that is a bit more common? I doubt we get this rum here in PA

Hmmm…. here are a few alternatives which may work well, although they may also not be that easy to find:

    Angostura 1919 (Trinidad) $28
    Pampero Anniversario (Venezuela) $28
    Vizcaya VXOP (Dominican Republic) $38
Sailor Jerry’s Spiced Navy Rum (US Virgin Islands) $22
Bacardi 8 yr (Puerto Rico) $22

All of these should be pretty amazing for this drink, although using Vizcaya would be a bit decadent.

Approximately how much is one stick of butter in oz or millgrams or grams? Would love to try this out, especially for these wonderful winter nights.
