Tequila makers sure do like naming their spirits after multiples. Perhaps less fanciful than most is Dos Manos (two hands), which is in keeping with its rather humble nature.

Though 100% agave (though reportedly there are mixto versions available, too), Dos Manos is not nearly as smooth and layered as many ultra-premium tequilas we review here. There’s quite a bit of bite, especially on the finish, but there’s a pleasant creaminess in the mid-palate, with some nice honey character, and a sweet vanilla note that hits the back of your tongue like ice cream. Considering it spends just two years in oak, it isn’t bad.

It all vanishes rather quickly though and leaves only a modest impression in the end. More interesting to most drinkers will likely be the $25 price tag, a huge discount vs. most 100% agave anejos. Just read the fine print and watch out for the mixto bottlings (which have different labels but still read “Dos Manos”), which are available at prices that are, truly, too good to be true.
