A perennial favorite “splurge” wine, BV’s epically-named Georges de Latour Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Private Reserve remains a winner in its 2006 vintage. Amazingly soft for a Napa Cabernet this young, it’s a wine inflected with cocoa powder atop a deep blueberry and raspberry core. It is drinking just about perfectly right now, with a moderate and soft, refreshing finish. When’s the last time you had a Napa Cab that drank like a summer-on-the-deck Pinot? Probably the last time you had 80 bucks to shell out on a bottle of wine, that’s when.

Jeez, 80 bucks? I’ll pass. Beaulieu Vineyards makes a handful of less expensive wines which are impressive in their own right.
