Review: 2007 Louis Jadot Beaujolais-Villages

Even if you live in the heart of the heartland, chances are you’ve seen Louis Jadot’s wines at your local supermarket or liquor store.

Jadot is to France as Mondavi is to California. The company produces an astonishing 250-plus different bottlings, so many that it includes a search function on its wine list on its website so you can find what you’re looking for. And the specific wine we’re talking about here — straight up Beaujolais-Villages — actually isn’t listed.

In any case, here we find Jadot making some of its best wine in years. The stuff you normally find in the supermarket isn’t Jadot’s best, but even this inexpensive bottle shows that either Jadot is really raising standards or that 2007 is going to be a phenomenal year for Burgundy.

The B-V is a beautiful wine that feels older than it is. Hints of earth pay homage to its Burgundy roots, with strawberry on the palate. There’s a hint of greenness that comes across as cough syrup-like on the finish, but it fades fast, leaving you with a mouth of earthy warmth. Surprisingly good for cold weather, this should tide you over until the 2008 Beaujolais Nouveaus arrive — November 20 is the big day this year.

Watch for more Jadot coverage here in coming weeks.

  1. I had a much different interpretation of this wine. I definietly picked up a spice note, pepper, a little vanilla, and an oaky/mossy flavor. Very nice for the price. I did find it on their website- though it was a difficult site to maneuver through.

Having a glass of it now… wow, that cherry note… mouth watering and so sweet to my nose. The soft tannins, I feel make this a nice wine to pair with food…
